You will need to sideload the APK file, you can download it from their website (just Google search it). You could extract the SAI app from your Android phone (after downloading it from the Play Store on your Android phone) or just download the APK file from the internet, and install (sideload) it on Shield TV.Īlso, as others recommended, install SmartTube Next (STN) on your Shield TV. XAPK file (Android app bundle) you will need to use the SAI app to install it. If you want, you can use some kind of APK extractor app or use the Split APK Installer (SAI) app to extract your own Android apps from your phone (note that due to Google recently changing the way apps are made, the APK extractor apps may not work anymore, so you may need to use the SAI app to extract the Android app from your phone which will work but you'll need to use the SAI app to install it on the Shield). I believe there's a 3rd party app you can purchase on the Play Store that will mimick a PC mouse control using the D-pad of the Shield remote, so another option. I just use a wireless Logitech PC keyboard which works great (it is RF based so it's way faster and responsive than the Shield Bluetooth remote, plus longer battery life). So if the app doesn't work with the D+pad controls of the Shield remote, you may need to connect a PC keyboard/mouse into the USB port (or use a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse). However, keep in mind that the Android Mobile apps may not work with the Shield remote as it was mostly designed for touchscreen use (may depend on the app and how the app developer designed it). Then you can open the Android app and use it. The sideloaded Android app will not appear on the stock home launcher (no thanks to Google), so you will need to download a 3rd party launcher from the Shield TV Play Store (I recommend using one called "Launcher" by Kamal Faraj). Then download a file manager app from the Play Store on the Shield TV (I recommend Amaze File Browser) and then open the APK file to install it. Then copy it to a USB drive and plug it into your Shield TV (if you have the Tube, I guess you can copy it to a micro SD card). If you want to sideload a web browser or any Android app (Android apps from Android phones/tablets), just download the Android. Now I can access my Google Drive account via through the web browser on my Shield TV (there's no Google Drive app on the Shield), and watch "free videos" on various websites on the internet (if you know what I mean by "free videos"), though I always use a VPN when doing so in order to prevent my ISP from knowing. So I sideloaded Firefox and Brave browsers on my Shield (just downloading and installing the APK), and I downloaded the various "add-ons" in the Firefox browser to block ads and trackers. We are lucky that Android OS is open source, and Google probably regrets making it open source (Android TV OS is still Android OS). Probably because Google doesn't want people to watch videos from various websites on the internet (piracy), yet alone use the web browser to download and sideload APK files. Google does NOT want people to use a web browser on the Shield TV/Android TV OS, hence why you don't really see web browsers on the Play Store of the Shield (though I recently saw just one 3rd party browser). I have sideloaded Android web browsers on my Shield TV. It's also compatible with the GeForce Now game streaming, a service from NVIDIA costing $7.99 per month. Many android apps can be successfully sideloaded if not available on the store. The Shield Android TV supports Youtube, Netflix, Google Assistant, Plex, Kodi (or the optimized SPMC) and many other Android video-streaming apps and games. The 2017 editions come with an always listening games controller that offers Google Assistant support. It comes in two versions - a 16 GB version for $199/£199 and a 500GB version for $299/£299.
